   As a teenager growing up in a small town in Oregon in the 1950s, I had no desire to finish high school. For one thing, my dad never finished. Also, my big ambition in life was to be a cartoonist, and I was, in fact, already selling some of my cartoons to small magazines. My hero, Walt Disney, had never finished high school, and I felt that if he could quit and succeed, so could I. But my mother would never hear of it, so, I continued to go.
   In about my sophomore year I began to sell cartoons to a small magazine in Thousand Oaks, California. It was called Computer News and was a trade journal about the computers of that time. These were nothing like the laptops we know today ... they were huge Univac computers which filled an entire room. I knew nothing about them, but still somehow managed to come up with cartoons about them.
    In my correspondence with the editor, Mr. Jackson Granholm, I mentioned my desire to quit high school and go into cartooning full time. He wrote back urging me to stay in school, spouting off all the reasons why school was important. To convince him I knew better, I told him about how Walt Disney had quit.
     A few weeks later, I was standing at the mailbox, waiting to see if any magazines had bought any of the cartoons I had recently submitted. When the mail came I was quite surprised to see one letter addressed to me from Walt Disney studios.
    It was from their personnel department, and I was sure it was a job offer. Not so. They told me that Mr. Jackson Granholm had contacted them on my behalf and explained my attitude about finishing high school. They advised me very strongly to stay in high school, pointing out that they never even considered applicants without a high school education and preferred some college.
    It took the winds out of my sails, but I guess it taught me two things: I was no Walt Disney, and times had changed. I finished high school, and went on for two years of college. Years later I worked for Walt Disney studios, as well as a couple of other major film studios, plus I have been doing cartooning on a freelance basis for years. To date I have been published in hundreds of publications, so I admit the college education was no deterrent at all.

Oleg: What does it mean – «junior high school»?
James: In most schools in the USA today the twelve grades of school are divided into six years of elementary training, three years of junior high school and the last three years of senior high school.
Oleg: Now I understand. Is the education compulsory in the USA?
James: Yes. All states require every girl and boy to go to school starting with the age of six.
Oleg: What about higher education? Is it expensive in America?
James: It is rather expensive.  Many American students get financial support from their parents or relatives.
Oleg: Can American students go to the university free of charge?
James: Everyone must pay the tuition fee. Its amount varies from state to state. This creates a financial hard-ship for some young people. However, each University offers a number of scholarships to deserving students.
Oleg: Are scholarships given only by universities?
James: Not really. Scholarships come from different sources: state authorities, private persons, US Army, various churches and funds.  Some young people can even get their scholarships for their athletic ability. Some are given for scholastic abilities. You have to compete to get your scholarship. You must do well, excel in something, show superior academic achievement.
 Oleg: Does your son know what he wants to major in?
James: Not for sure.  He hasn`t made up his mind yet, but I think it will be either mechanical or civil engineering.
Oleg: That is a very good career for a boy.
James: Perhaps it is. We wanted him to be a lawyer but he is keen on building bridges and things like that. That`s why he applied for admission to a technical college last year.
Oleg: Let`s hope he will be a good engineer.

   In Great Britain children begin to go to school at the age of 5. First they study at infant schools. In these schools they learn to draw with coloured pencils and paints. They also make figures out of plasticize and work with paper and glue. They play much because they are very young. Later they begin to learn letters and read, write and count.
    At the age of 7 English schoolchildren go to junior schools. They do many subjects: English and Maths, History and Music, Natural history and Drawing, handicrafts, French and Latin. They do not go to school as early as we do, but they stay there longer.
   The first lesson usually starts at 9 o’clock. There are three lessons with short breaks of ten minutes between them and then an hour break for lunch. After lunch they have two more lessons which are over by half past three.
   If you have a look at an English pupils’ school record, you will see that the marks in it differ from the marks we have. Our schoolchildren get marks from 1 to 12.
   At English school there are marks from 1 to 10 and at some schools from 1 to 100. Junior schools ends at the age of 11 when pupils take the Eleven Plus examination and then secondary school begins. At the age of 16 schoolchildren take their exams. Only 45 per cent continue with fulltime education after 16.
   The rest go to work or join employment training schemes.

EDUCATION IN UKRAINE
   The system of secondary education in Ukraine includes primary forms and junior   and senior secondary forms. Children usually go to school at the age of 6 or 7. There are some pre­school institutions, like nursery schools or kindergartens, but they are not obligatory.
    Primary forms comprise 1 to 4 forms. Junior secondary forms comprise 5 to 9 forms. After the 9th form children can enter technical schools of different types. Those who want to enter higher educational institutions should complete 10—11 forms. Students can also enter higher education  al   institutions after  graduating from specialized colleges  or lyceums. They prepare students in different fields, whether the humanities or the sciences. Some of them are organized under the authorities of higher educational establishments.
    The system of higher education is presented by universities, polytechnic institutes or specialized institutes. Universities offer a five ­year course of study and usually have from six to twelve. Institutes train specialists for industry, agriculture and economy. Most of them have been conferred the status of Academy or University recently. Students are also offered post­ graduate education and scientific research work. Nowadays due to the state of our national   economy not many young people are engaged in the research work. But still in some fields of science there are outstanding discoveries and research papers. Some universities and institutes have refresher courses. Recently a great number of private educational establishments have appeared. Some institutions have fee­ paying groups or departments. The students may get education there at the same high level as in the state institutions.

   My friendship with Kathy wasn’t a perfect friendship. I learned very soon in our relationship that Kathy was jealous. We would have great fun going out shopping but if I bought, say, a dress for a party and she thought my dress was better than hers, she would start to say slightly unkind things about it. She would be keen to come out with me to buy the dress. She would give me a lot of helpful advice while I was trying on the various dresses in the shops. Her advice would be good. She would even tell the shop assistant if she thought the price was too high. I can remember one occasion when she said this and, to my surprise, they knocked the price down so that I could afford to buy it. The trouble would come later. When we were actually going to the party and we were both dressed up and she was looking marvellous (for she was very beautiful) she would suddenly say, “I think, Sarah, we were both wrong about that dress. It looks a bit cheap, doesn’t it!”
   Once or twice I “dropped” Kathy. I told her I was too busy to see her. Or I told her I had to see another friend. All these lies hurt me because I had no other friend and I was so lonely. But they never hurt her. She just smiled sweetly and said she’d see me next week. And of course, within a week or so, I’d be on the phone asking her to come out. She never minded this. She never sulked at me and pretended that she was too busy.
   Students always celebrated the end of the college year with a fancy-dress ball. It was a big event. But as luck would have it, Kathy and I had made other arrangements for the day of the ball. We had booked to go to the theatre. We had talked for ages of going, and at last we had our tickets. For us it was a big event. It was a musical and our favourite singer star was in it, so our hearts were set on the theatre.
   Then Kathy came round to see me. Mother was in at the time, and I had to speak to her on the doorstep because Mum had just been having a go at me for seeing too much of Kathy.
   “I don’t want that girl coming in this house and nosing around.” So I told Kathy I couldn’t invite her in because my Mum had a bad headache.
   Kathy didn’t mind. She smiled and said she was sorry about my mother’s bad head. I was sure she knew what had really happened.
   But she carried on smiling, and then she said: “I’m sorry, but I can’t come to the theatre with you after all. My brother’s come home and he wants to take me to the fancy-dress ball at the college. I can’t let him down.” I couldn’t believe that she would let me down. She knew how much I had looked forward to the theatre trip. We had talked about it together for months.
   I was almost in tears by the time I had said goodbye to her and closed the door. My Mum was kind and understanding. She made me promise I would never see Kathy again. I agreed, and felt that was the least I could do by way of revenge for my disappointment. I told myself that I would never so much as talk to Kathy if I saw her. Our relationship was at an end. I would never forget what she had done to me.
